
Sadiya Class Descriptions
Which class is right for you?
Because belly dance is so female-body friendly, most women experience success moving at
least one part of their body very quickly. No dance experience is necessary, in fact many
women have never done any type of dance before they come to belly dance class. Kids are
natural dancers and find the movements relatively easy and fun. All of Sadiya's classes are
tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. One size does not fit all!
Introduction to Belly Dance for Kids
Belly dance, in its countries of origin is passed from adult women in families to their children.
Your children will learn the basic technique of belly dance in a fun and supportive environment.
Kids are encouraged to express themselves through choreography and improvisational
dancing presented in a fun, game-like environment. Sadiya emphasizes the beauty and
strength of all girls in contrast to the limited ideals of female beauty that girls are exposed to in
the popular culture. The class is formatted so that girls have the opportunity to make friends,
dance, play games and learn about Middle Eastern dance. Although any girl can succeed in
oriental dance, many times children who feel too restricted in traditional Western dance
flourish.
Introduction to Belly Dance for Mothers and Daughters
Daughters and mothers of all ages can enjoy spending time together, dancing and having fun.
No dance experience is necessary. Sadiya will teach basic moves of belly dance in a friendly
and fun manner. During class mothers and daughters will sometimes work in pairs and
sometimes learn as a full class. There are lots of opportunities to meet other participants and
create a supportive community of women. Mothers and daughters (with Sadiya's help) will
have the opportunity to choreograph their own duet to perform for the class at the end of the
session. This class is open to big sister/little sister, aunt/neice, grandmother/grandchild, or
any other combination that works for you.
Beginning Belly Dance
Sadiya's beginning belly dance class focuses on learning the basic technique of isolations in
belly dance. The dancer learns to move certain parts of her/his body "in isolation" from the
other parts. From there we will add isolations together to make combinations and then really
start moving. This class is for the absolute beginner and the beginner "in progress." Sadiya
tailors instruction to fit the specific needs of each student, so that you are always challenged to
move to the next level. Students who have mastered isolations will begin layering those. This
class explores bellydance technique focusing on isolations, posture, kinesthetic awareness,
and the biomechanics of movement.
Advanced Beginning/Intermediate Belly Dance
Previous belly dance experience is definitely necessary for this class. We will focus on
layering, understanding middle eastern rhythms, utilizing concepts of space/time/energy and
improvisation. We will also include dancing with zills and using props.
Belly Dance for Fun- Rochester Athletic Club
Sadiya co-teaches this class with Tirza, alternating every week. The class is structured as a 6
week session that repeats itself. It is designed for beginning belly dance students to learn the
basic technique and movement. Continued attendance session to session allows the student
to deepen her/his understanding of the basics and move into layering isolations onto one
another.
